Betty Buck began
at the age of 19 working for her father, Wm. Irwin Buck, in the warehouse
of Buck Distributing Company in Upper Marlboro. Over the years she
learned all aspects of the business by answering the phone, driving
the forklift, and doing whatever was asked. She assumed greater responsibility
and essentially had been running the business for ten years when she
was named president of the organization, which was ten months before
the death of Irwin Buck.
Betty's community involvements reflect the diversity of the region.
Although she supports many community organizations and causes, Betty
is known especially for her work with the Prince George's and other
Chambers of Commerce, the St. Mary of the Assumption Guild, American
Red Cross, American Heart Association, Prince George's Hospice Cup,
Partners in Education, and United Cerebral Palsy (UCP).
Betty has held state and local government positions, including
Chair of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission. She has chaired
many Prince George?s County government committees and commissions
and task forces, including chairing the Transition for Prince George's
County Executive Wayne Curry. She is a member of the Maryland Judicial
Compensation Commission and past member of the Anne Arundel County
Planning Advisory Board. Betty has many years of involvement with
numerous Chambers of Commerce, including Upper Marlboro, Prince
George's and Maryland. She has served as a United Way Regional Chairperson
and was part of the 1993 Leadership Washington class.
Following in the footsteps of her late father, Wm. Irwin Buck --
known as "Mr. UCP" -- Betty provides vital support to our agency.
Betty initiated and runs the successful "Irwin Buck Memorial Golf
Tournament", considered one of the finest charity golf tournaments
in the area. In the past 18 years, through this tournament, Betty
has raised over $500,000 for UCP's programs for disabled individuals.
Equally important she brings many friends to our organization.
Betty Buck has received numerous honors and awards over the years.
Some in fact have been associated with her support of United Cerebral
Palsy. In 1990 she received the "Salute to Excellence"
award presented by then-Governor William Donald Schaefer. Then in
1991 she was named a "Prince Georgian of the Year." She was selected
as a "Washingtonian of the Year" by Washingtonian Magazine in 1995.
Betty is particu-larly fond of this honor because Wm. Irwin Buck
was the first Prince Georgian to be named "Washingtonian of the
Year" (1981). They remain the only parent and child to receive this
honor. United Cerebral Palsy is gratified that Betty Buck has continued
supporting our programs and the Wm. Irwin Buck Center.
